The White Panda formed when two boyhood friends discovered they had independently embarked on mashup careers in college. Chicago-based Procrast (Tom Evans) first blended Rick Astley snippets with 2 Live Crew grooves as a way to avoid productive activity in 2008, while DJ Griffi (Dan Griffith) embarked on the same mission, for a similar purpose, in Los Angeles. Their combined effort, the White Panda, launched in 2009 with a single that topped internet radio charts days later. They’ve since had 27 singles reach #1 on Hype Machine.

In the middle of a global explosion of Electronic Dance Music, a genre that thrives in the most exclusive nightclubs of the world’s cosmopolitan cities, a prodigious producer has emerged from the unlikeliest of places. The small seaport town of Mystic, Connecticut, has been the home of Audien (AKA Nate Rathbun) for his entire life, and it’s in a small apartment in Mystic where Audien began creating music in 2008. Using a very basic set up, and a secret cocktail of plug-ins, Audien worked diligently to hone his craft. By age 17, while his friends were either preparing college applications or teeing up jobs, Audien began to test the waters by sending his unsolicited music out to producers, labels & bloggers.

Producer/DJ DallasK has come a long way since his fourth grade self was “buying Ibiza trance mixes.” ”Once I started hearing the new wave of electronic music like MSTRKRFT and Justice, that’s when I decided that this was what I wanted to do as a career,” says the Los Angeles-via- Orlando 22-year-old. The former guitarist and saxophonist began producing at 14 after discovering GarageBand on a teacher’s MacBook and, a few years later, began DJing at various venues. He has since combined his love of electro-house with the ethereal electro-pop of M83, imbuing each of his numerous remixes and productions with song structures more suited to pop than EDM. “I’m trying to bring songs into dance music instead of quote-unquote bangers,” says DallasK. The prolific producer has already earned acclaim for the grimy “Jupiter,” a mellifluous yet dance floor-filling remix of Nero’s “Guilt,” and his own Front/Back EP, among many others. Before he could legally drink, DallasK spun at more clubs than we’ll ever step foot in. But the road warrior looks forward to playing in North America and beyond, while simultaneously producing more tracks for himself and other artists.

There are five words slipped into the middle of ‘Night and Day’ – the hyper-infectious, propulsive track that comes halfway through Hot Chip’s fifth album – that in many ways sum up what’s In Our Heads. Somewhere between the fizzing percussion and the relentless and addictive bassline, a processed voice intones the line, “I like Zapp not Zappa”.
Although the Alexis Taylor penned words were written primarily as a reaction to ill-informed requests during the frontman’s DJ gigs, if viewed as a statement of intent for the record as a whole they speak volumes. They seem to say this record is playful yet unburdened by extraneous fuss or showiness. That this is a joyous record aimed squarely at the heart and at the heart of the dancefloor.
