SFRA: What inspired you to start BASSDROP CLOTHING?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: As a graphic designer, I always had the passion for electronic music even in the underground days. I would always listen to the latest mixes when working and the music inspired me when designing. One day I saw a contest to design a t-shirt for a DJ and I entered for fun thinking nothing of it. The design didn’t win but I had overwhelming feedback to sell it or design more. This triggered the idea to design more dance music related stuff for fun on the side. After some research for other EDM related brands, I came back empty handed and this inspired me to create a clothing brand for this niche market.
SFRA: How did you discover a need for this type of products in the marketplace?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: At first I was looking to sell my ideas and designs to another brand but after looking for dance music related brands I couldn’t find any relevant ones. I saw this as an opportunity to establish one and provide the community with a brand they could enjoy not just at raves but in everyday life as well.
SFRA: What has been the most difficult aspect of getting your brand off the ground and how did you overcome that?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: In the beginning once I had a few designs it was a matter of finding resources and the budget to get the shirts on the market. I invested few hundred dollars of my own money to get a few shirts made in the hopes of raising more money to invest back into the company. It took a few months and lots of patience to move the shirts but this simply gave me determination to keep working hard. A few months down the road, I had one of my best friends jump in to help me out as I was getting overwhelmed with the amount of work. We have come a long way since we partnered up on his project and looking forward to what the future holds for Bassdrop.
SFRA: What is the brand’s philosophy?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: Bassdrop is about the moment that connects us all through our passion for dance music. We believe in working hard, dreaming big to achieve our passions and giving back to the community.
SFRA: Is it a struggle to keep up with trend and competition in such a modern and constantly-evolving fashion industry?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: The clothing business can be tough but because we market to such a niche audience it makes it a little easier to keep up with trends. Having said that we like to set our own trends by coming up with new ideas and designs, this helps us stay ahead of the game and have unique designs.
SFRA: Tell us more about BASSDROP CLOTHING. How has the brand progressed since its launch?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: Bassdrop started with a design focus on many electronic music sayings and music related shirts. Since than the brand has turned to focus more on the brand name itself. The past few collection releases, we have featured more designs centered around Bassdrop and even created our own mascot. Nova is our rave panda, he was created to give the brand a face and so far our fans love him!
SFRA: Tell me about the name.
BASSDROP CLOTHING: The name is kind of ironic because you would think were all about the heavy side of dance music but were not. I named the brand Bassdrop because it’s a moment that unites and brings joy to people. You could say our name is something people will never forget and always have a good memory of. Bassdrop is meant to represent a lifestyle for the moments we live for and enjoy.
SFRA: Are there any celebrities wearing BASSDROP CLOTHING products?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: To date we’ve seen Pink Panda, Dantiez Saunderson, Milk n Cookies and a few more artists rock our gear. Its always humbling when people you look up to support your brand by wearing something you created.
SFRA: Where would you like to see the brand go?
BASSDROP CLOTHING: My dream is for Bassdrop to be on the same level as Neff one day and even become bigger with sub brands within the industry. I have already started looking into event production to expand our base and grow the brand into more than just a clothing line.
