As usual, the results of DJ Mag Top 100 were disappointing for many electronic music followers all over the world. Most popular complaints that we heard were about Hardwell’s being called the #1 DJ in the world this year again and Armin Van Buuren’s losing one slot and becoming #3 (just one slot above Martin Garrix, 18-year-old wunderkind producer from Holland, best know for his tracks “Animals”, “Wizard”, and “Helicopter”).

One of our Instagram followers expressed his frustration with the results by leaving a comment on our feed: “Armin should be 1. Not only did he shove out music like nobody’s business, but he toured ASOT 650 and Armin Only Intense. Put Hardwell on stage for 5-8 hours and expect him to do a vinyl set and I guarantee you he wouldn’t know what to do.”

While it is completely understandable that this year’s ranking won’t leave everyone happy, the fact that Armin van Buuren received the award for ‘Highest Trance DJ’ should make all Trance fans to feel a little better. After all, #3 slot is a fantastic result given the high-level of competition his year.

Other highlights of the ceremony included surprisingly low rankings for Madeon, Richie Hawtin, and Knife Party. Each of them lost at least 14 slots. On the other hand, this year we got many newcomers who you would expect to see on the list anyway. Most obvious examples include Deorro, Quintino, Borgeous, The Chainsmokers, Audien, DVBBS, Borgore, Firebeatz, VINAI, MAKJ, DJ Snake, Carnage, TJR, 3lau, and Wolfpack.

Of course, electronic music comes in so many shapes and forms that no single chart can reflect musical tastes and preferences of every individual member of the community. However, if you are feeling strongly about being misrepresented and looking for an opportunity to make sure that your voice is heard, you can use alternative polls such as the one created by Magnetic Mag to cast your vote and be amazed how much poll result depend on people you’re surveying. If you try to find Tiesto and Martin Garrix among 5 names on the list, try to scroll to the middle or even bottom of the list because that’s where they are on that list.
